There are summers that remain on the skin like the sun of the mountains, and others that are kept in the soul as a long sigh. The summers in Gaucín are of the latter. CREAR TEXTO

I have rarely seen such an explosion of flowers as in Spring at El Duende. Some of them we sowed years ago and they just keep popping out each Spring. Others we sow every year. We have spread them out onto the meadows surrounding the house and they are absolutely breathtaking. I fill the house with them and bring them to my friends or let them pick them. My favourites are the sweetpeas with their delicate and beautiful scent. They last for many weeks. From the almond blossom end of January to the end of May you will find wild flowers all over the land and garden. Then it continues in the garden, with oleanders, bottle brush, bougainvilleas, callas and cannas, esterilzias, plumbago, geraniums, roses, and many more. I can just sit and look at them for hours, and I feel that they bring a lot of happiness to the heart.

When it comes to the kitchen and cooking this part of web page could be endless. Food has always been important at El Duende and the kitchen has been designed to really cook in. We also have an out door kitchen to grill and make paellas or to cook soups and stews that take hours, so as not to fill the house with cooking smells. We get most of our vegetables from the garden under Andrey´s regime, and for vegetarians it is a paradise. In Summer there is an endless supply of tomatoes of all kinds and colours plus all the Summer vegetables.
As many of our friends that live around us have the same predilection for good food, there is a lot of cooking and eating together going on. Sometimes authors of cook books come to visit and there have been quite a few cooking courses that were great fun and improved our arts a lot.
Andrey and Iryna built an improvised contraption in the veg garden to smoke fresh fish, like they did in their native Ukraine. I can´t tell you how delicious the smoked salmon or mackerels taste!

I do not like making desserts so much, but as specially our male companion love something sweet, I have learnt. And I actually have come to love making postres.

On the last two weekends of May the many artists that have made their home in Gaucin open their studios for everyone to visit and buy their artworks. This has been happening for many years now and the Open Studios have become well known in the region. Some are very renowned artists, of which I am showing just a very few examples: the colourful and very lively paintings of Raffaela Zenoni, the hyper realistic art of Joseba Sanchez Zabaleta, whose pictures are represented in various museums in Spain, and Jim Rattenbury, who has taken part in the Biennale in Venice. And of course many more excellent artist, ceramicists, painters, sculptors and photographers. During these two weeks the village bustles with visitors and the restaurants and bars compete with wonderful tapas and menus. It is a happy and lively event.
Gaucin hosts many different art courses and some of us who never dreamt of being an artist, have taken to the paint brush or other materials, and have become part of the artistic life of the village.
